A Chartwell Residence
MH Akers Custom Homes is very proud to have been selected general contractor for this substantial project in one of Memphis’ most prestigious neighborhoods Chartwell. The project’s design/build team is completed with Memphis architect T. Douglas Enoch, Nashville landscape architect Mike Kaiser of Kaiser Trabue, and Memphis designer Mary Katherine Taras of MKFT Interiors.
Doug Enoch’s understated English-tradition exterior is accented by numerous hand-made brick retaining and bordering walls and stone terraces and transitional steps, all serving to tame a topographically challenging one plus acre homesite. Ogden Pools’ elegant stone decked, Hydrazzo finished pool and fountain puts the cherry on top of Mike Kaiser’s exceptional landscape design.
Additional exterior features include a natural slate roof blending black, charcoal, and royal purple Vermont slates, German-import copper gutters, Kolbe & Kolbe casement windows and entry doors, sandblasted limestone entryway and porte-cochère archways, a magnificent timbered and screened porch with wood-burning masonry fireplace and accompanying BBQ porch, and beautiful Ranch House brand custom garage doors.
Inside, the clients’ desire for understated, English country elegance has led us to many richly charactered reclaimed materials. From a top secret Ohio Amish-country source come wonderful hand-hewn 19th century ash and beech timbers, which our artisans have fashioned into trusses for the vaulted great room and ceiling beams and purlins elsewhere. 150 year old elm threshing-floor boards find their way into a library-paneled foyer and wide-planked gentleman’s study. Reclaimed white oak is used for the main stairway balustrade and wainscoting.
Other nice interior touches include Miele and Sub-Zero appliances, entry hall Rumford fireplace, wide-board white oak flooring, Kerns and Wilcheck cabinetry, climatized basement, high-efficiency insulation and HVAC, an über-cool caterer’s kitchen, and his and hers garages.
A St. Albans Residence
The seventh of nine homes to be built in MH Akers Custom Homes’ exclusive Germantown enclave St. Albans, this project designed by Memphisband Nashville architect Brad Shapiro of Shapiro and Company Architects is nearing completion. Memphis landscape architect Greg Pope has created an intricate rear yard design featuring a three-level Hydrazzo lined, bluestone coped and decked pool and fountain, multi-level ipe surfaced deck, Tennessee river rock lined drycreek with arched ipe bridges, and a Pennsylvania bluestone paver walkway. Shapiro’s massive vaulted and timbered rear porch with outdoor kitchen and Oklahoma stone fireplace overlooks this impressive rear yard landscape centered on a magnificent 200 year old Quercus Alba.
Additional exterior features include Kolbe & Kolbe casement windows and entry doors, standing-seam copper roofing, four-step process brick slurry, clear redwood cornice and siding, custom-made reclaimed white oak front entry door, and Superior Clay Products terracotta chimney pots.
Inside, the volume of twelve and fourteen foot ceilings create an impressive space. Off the foyer is a handsome bookcase-lined library with character-grade white oak library paneling, arched ceiling, and sandblasted Texas limestone fireplace. The brick-walled breakfast room features a timbered ceiling vaulting to twenty feet. Flooring materials are 8″ character-grade white oak and thermal-finished Pennsylvania bluestone in an ashlar pattern. The kitchen features custom-made, hand-finished cabinetry, Sub-Zero, Asko, and Viking appliances, and spectacular Vermont soapstone tops. The friends’ entryway is accented by a retro-look, vertical v-groove planked and painted wainscoting. A very stylish black walnut vanity and Carrera marble vessel sink set against a mirrored wall create stunning effect in the diminutive guest’s powder room. Other baths feature Kohler plumbing and beautiful marbles from Vermont and Italy.
