From fashion trends to music, and everything in between, it really is true what they say: what goes around comes around. Home design trends are no different! Though some trends never went out of style and have withstood the test of time, there are some that at the time seemed like passing fads, but are now coming back for a second (or third) revival.
Colorful Kitchens: Through much of the past decade, kitchens went from wood, to black, to white. But back in the day, kitchens used to be doused with a good bit of bright colors, and that is coming back in style! Even the same colors that were used back then are all the rage again, for example light and bright cheery hues of mint, pastel yellow, and coral from ceiling to floor are the perfect way to brighten things up and mix in some personality compared to the recent plain white backdrops that are “modern” kitchens.
Carpet is Making a Comeback: Carpet was always the flooring textile of choice for much of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s. Since the 90s and 2000s however, tile and wood made their presence known, even combining the two recently even in the form of tiles that look like wood panels. But carpet is something that is starting to regain momentum, especially for bedrooms. To be honest, there’s nothing more shocking than stepping out of bed on a cold winter morning and placing your feet on tile. Though it can be a form of your alarm clock back-up, carpet is always more comfortable, as well as providing additional benefits like sound absorption and temperature insulation.
Sunken Living Rooms are Back on the Rise: What originally started as a “conversation pit” is coming back in a big way in both new construction as well as home renovations. Either by making an architectural change in flooring levels or building up the surrounding floor to create a recessed space, this hollowed out area in the middle of the living room adds not only some surface variances, but provides a cozy area that promotes socialization. Pair it with some low lighting, comfortable seating options, and a few small tables, and you’ve got yourself the perfect venue for game night, debates over martinis, or a cozy place to snuggle up for a Netflix marathon.
All-Over Printed Wallpaper: This is a dated trend that used to be the meat of home-renovation shows back in the 90s (they always had to strip the wallpaper!), but now we’re seeing bold prints pop up all over the place on walls of bathrooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens here and there. This is definitely a great way to express your personality and give your home a bit of an edge. Just choose carefully before applying, because you know what’s in store for you should you decide to change it!
