A bathroom remodel helps boost your home’s resale value, but it’s also a project to consider even if you have no intention of moving. Bathroom design trends 2018 focus on escape. Yes, it’s the most private room in the house, but the bathroom should also offer a calming refuge from the outside world.
The Day Spa
Upscale bathrooms are incorporating more day spa elements. Say goodbye to the plain vanilla shower and hello to showers with various heads and jets. “All-wet” showers resemble a room rather than a shower stall, as water comes from all angles for a relaxing, cleansing experience. Spa baths per se, however, are out. They’re simply too large and bulky for most bathrooms.
Freestanding Baths
The freestanding bath trend will continue into 2018, but with a twist. Instead of the classic white freestanding tub, colors are now key. Black tubs with a white interior make a statement, as do cast stone baths.
Hidden Storage
While it’s not time to banish the bathroom cabinet entirely, the latest trend is invisible or hidden storage space. Whether shelving is hidden behind a mirror – not exactly a new concept – or built into the wall and hidden by a door, personal items should remain out of view.
Hardware
Gold or copper hardware for taps is out – brass, matte black and softer metallic are in.
Natural Light
Not everyone lives in a neighborhood where a floor-to-ceiling bathroom window makes sense. If you are among the lucky ones with a lot of privacy around your house, a floor-to-ceiling window not only makes a dramatic statement, but allows you to gaze upon lovely views no matter why you’re in the bathroom. If such windows aren’t a possibility, consider installing a skylight for natural light.
Larger Tiles, Less Grout
Larger tiles are a major bathroom design trend, corresponding with less grout. It’s a practical trend, as larger tiles are easier to clean. Texture and pattern in tiles rule the bathroom in 2018. Subway tiles are definitely out.
Color Trends
For 2018, look for soothing, subtle colors or go wild with hot, splashy shades. Remember that a lighter color can make a small bathroom look larger. If you do plan to sell your house soon, a neutral shade like beige or gray is your best bet. If you intend to stay put awhile, consider a light reddish/pinkish hue, which adds energy along with coziness to the bathroom. Rust, sienna and terra cotta are all trending colors for bathrooms, whether as a primary or accent shade. So is a navy blue, or a brighter blue and white combination. While walls are crucial, don’t forget your towels and other linens. They can add charm and color to your bathroom and are more far more easily switched out than repainting.
