Energy prices are going up, but there are many ways you can make your home more energy efficient. Small or large changes can make a difference and stretch your dollar.
Appliances
Reducing the amount of energy you use in your home saves you money. There are a lot of energy efficient appliances on the market that can help with keeping the cost down. When shopping for new appliances look for the energy star label. Not all appliances are made equal, refrigerators, dishwashers, washers and dryers with the energy star label use less water, and energy which saves you money.
Insulation
Most homes in the United States don’t have enough insulation, and have air leaks. Are you one of those homes? You can save up to 25% on your energy bill if you insulate your hot water heater alone. Make sure there is a proper amount of insulation in ceilings, walls, attics, and crawl spaces to prevent unwanted heat loss or gain. The benefits of having the right amount of insulation will make your home more comfortable, and reduce your utility bill.
Doors & Windows
If you want to see a change in your utility bill, check your doors and windows. By replacing old doors and windows with energy efficient products you will save money. Energy efficient windows are better insulated and will keep the hot air out in the warmer months, and keep the cold air out in the colder months. Energy efficient windows are made with a special coating that blocks out the sun’s ultraviolet rays, which can damage furniture, paintings, and carpet in your home. You will consume less energy which will save you money. Patio doors that have a slider lose much more air than leading types of doors. If there is a draft coming from any door in your house it is best replace the door with something energy efficient. You can also use a weather stripping, or caulking around doors and windows for extra insulation. Look for the energy star label when looking for new doors and windows.
Simple Changes
If you change your light bulbs to energy efficient light bulbs you use around 25-80% less energy, and they last up to 25 times longer. Plant a shade tree it can keep your house cooler on hot days. Ceiling fans help circulate cool air keeping costs down. An easy project is placing outlet seals on outlets, and light switches to stop air infiltration.
