As is the case in most endeavors, successful custom home projects are the result of cooperative teamwork among talented individuals in their areas of expertise. I use the above photo to illustrate this point. When I look at this family room of a home we built, I see an utterly satisfying result of the efforts of architect, builder, and interior designer. Not to mention the actual artisan craftsmen who toil to execute their demanding requirements.
I see the beautifully proportioned space, of volume and width and breadth, and the richness, tradition, and detailing of the wainscoted walls. I see the successful division of the room into casual dining and casual living areas, forming a pleasing and pragmatic whole. The work of architect T. Douglas Enoch.
I see the masterful work of Amy Turner, interior designer. Her use of high gloss Farrow and Ball paint on the wainscoting (all seven coats of it !) in a lovely neutral yet exhilarating shade of gray-green. Her selection of a wonderfully simple and perfect Chesney’s mantle piece and using brushed stainless steel for its facing surround. Traditional furnishings combined with edgier lighting and detailing create the tension that any space must possess to be wonderful.
Finally, I see the work that we do to make the designers’ ideas and visions a reality. To make sure that the walls of the vaulted space remain perfectly plumb, we designed and created turnbuckle collar ties in lacquered polished steel. To anchor the room we chose stunning wide-plank rift and quartered white oak floors in character grade. We labored to create a dust-free environment so that the exacting high gloss wainscoted walls would be blemish free. And all of this, of course, within the context of the dozens of other best building practices that go into producing a well-built, low-maintenance home.
