Few architectural details have the potential to add more charm, more cachet, more sex-appeal than stairways. Some, like this niche-creating modernist one, satisfy our desire to be cocooned.
Here, the modern, strong, and clean design aesthetic combines with the sensuality of the undulating curves. I’m melting with envy.
The wonders of engineering allow this so-called cantilevering technique. With one end of the stone treads barely imbedded in the adjoining masonry wall and staying the rotational forces exerted, the “trick” that allows the marvel of this genre is the transfer of vertical forces (aided by the interlocking rebate here) downward, tread by tread, similarly to an arch, all the way to the bottom step.
A somewhat more refined example of the cantilevered genre, still relatively modest, but with an alluring and elegant wrought metal balustrade.
And finally, the stuff that dreams are made of. What more could I add that this picture doesn’t already say?
